About FinancialRoots

We're a small team of writers, small business owners, and former first-generation college students. We started FinancialRoots because the personal finance internet is broken.

Why this site exists

Most personal finance content online is written for people who already have money. The advice assumes a 401(k) match, a credit score above 750, and rent that's only 25% of take-home pay. For everyone else — immigrants opening their first U.S. bank account, single parents juggling two jobs, restaurant servers paying off a $4,000 credit card balance, freelancers with variable income — the existing guidance often misses entirely.

FinancialRoots is for those readers. Our goal is to publish honest, plain-language guides that don't gloss over reality, don't sell you something at the end, and don't waste your time.

What we believe

  • Clear over clever. We'd rather be useful than smart-sounding.
  • Honest about trade-offs. Every financial decision involves trade-offs. We'll name them.
  • No false urgency. No "act now or lose forever" emails, no countdown timers, no FOMO.
  • Real numbers. When we cite hourly rates, payoff times, or returns, we use realistic figures — not best-case scenarios.
  • Reader privacy. Our calculators run entirely in your browser. We don't store your numbers.

How we make money

We earn revenue through display advertising and, in the future, may include carefully chosen affiliate links to financial products we genuinely use and recommend. We will always disclose these clearly. We do not accept payment to feature specific products in articles, and editorial decisions are kept fully separate from any advertising.

Who writes here

Articles are bylined with the author's real name and a short bio. Our writers come from backgrounds in journalism, accounting, and small business — not finance influencer culture. We are not licensed financial advisors. For decisions specific to your situation, please work with a CFP or fiduciary advisor.
